The Executive Team

Dr Tony Coulepis – Executive Chairman

Dr Anthony (Tony) Coulepis has over 35 years’ experience in the healthcare, pharmaceutical, biotechnology and life sciences industries and graduated with a PhD in microbiology from Monash University, specialising in virology (Hepatitis A).

Tony began his career with positions at Monash University. He then worked with the World Health Organization (WHO) and later at Fairfield Hospital for Infectious Diseases, prior to appointment at AMRAD Corporation Ltd, a biopharmaceutical company. During his time in various healthcare and life science industries, Tony has been involved with the development of healthcare services, pharmaceutical, diagnostic, manufacturing, and reagent sectors of relevant industries.

Tony has held a variety of positions including at Board level. He has also been a CEO, General Manager, Business Development Director, Operations Director, Laboratory Director and Senior Scientist.

Prior to being appointed to the above positions, Tony was the founding CEO of Cellsense Pty Ltd and Australian Stem Cell HealthCare Pty Ltd, which are companies in the umbilical cord blood-stem-cell collection, processing and storage industry. Prior to this, Tony was the founding Executive Director and CEO of the Australian Biotechnology Association (ABA), which he transformed to become AusBiotech Ltd, Australia’s peak biotechnology industry organisation. Tony developed and implemented AusBiotech’s first business plan, titled, “Growing Australian Biotechnology” and also developed the organisation’s second business plan, titled, “Globalising Australian Biotechnology”.

During his time at AusBiotech, Tony produced over 60 industry submissions, organised more than 252 events Australia-wide and was involved in more than 25 international missions and associated activities.

Tony is the author of more than 80 scientific and industry publications.

Dr Peter Hughes – Managing Director

Dr Peter Hughes was the principal founder of Ekera Medical Ltd.

Dr Hughes has had over 18 years’ extensive international business experience in the development and management of complex, multi-faceted business functions and large-scale organisations.  Peter has held line-management responsibilities in both publicly listed and private enterprises, and has previously initialised and founded a global health operating division for a major Australian public company which had a gross turnover in excess of A$600 million per annum.

Within the last 10 years, Peter has been responsible for the development and operational establishment of the most technologically advanced private acute-care hospital in the southern hemisphere, and has completed the turnaround and re-positioning of two major not-for-profit bio-medical research institutions and a publicly listed technology enterprise.

Peter has previously founded and has held ownership positions in a number of private “for profit” successful entities including Fitness2live and Tampap Pty Ltd.  Peter is a globally recognised expert in the design, development and operation of primary, sub-acute and acute healthcare systems and infrastructure, and is a sought-after speaker and educator who holds undergraduate degrees in both environmental science and architecture, and post-graduate qualifications including an MBA and a DBA.

After most recently leaving the Epworth Healthcare Group where he was the Executive Director / CEO of Epworth Eastern Private Hospital, Peter is now the inaugural Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Ekera Medical Ltd.

Mr David Hodge – CEO Operations

David is a seasoned Business Executive with extensive experience in business start-ups and general management, and has specialised in the healthcare sector for the last 25 years.

Over the last 10 years,  David has been providing strategic business advice to a wide range of clients in the healthcare sector, ranging from regional health authorities to private hospitals and day surgeries, and is well known to a number of Ekera’s Stakeholders.

Prior to establishing his specialist consultancy company, Axtrim Group Pty Ltd, David held several Senior Management roles in the industry including at Bovis Lend Lease, Australian Hospital Care Pty Ltd and Monash IVF.

David originally qualified as a Chartered Accountant and therefore has strong financial skills and fiscal discipline. David’s expertise is a welcomed addition to the Ekera Group of Companies.

Mr Graeme Taylor – Chief Financial Officer

Graeme Taylor comes to Ekera with over 25 years’ experience in both Operations and Finance. With a Business Finance Degree and further Post Graduate qualifications, Graeme has earned the title of CPA.

Graeme’s professional career has included time spent both in the accounting profession as well as a number of selected Industry appointments. Having held the position of Asia Pacific Financial Controller for Tandem Computers, Graeme spent a great deal of time throughout the Oceania region, the USA and Europe developing an International Reporting system for the Company while being responsible for a Division turning over in excess of $200,000,000 USD, utilising 700 staff and reporting activities across 13 individual countries.

More recently Graeme worked in the communications sector for Phillips and with a number of smaller organisations assisting them to restructure their operations.

An important aspect of his life is family and with his wife Jo, Graeme loves to spend time with their 3 children exploring outback destinations.

Ms Christelle Bouzeid – Project Co-ordinator

Christelle completed a Bachelor of Business in 2010. Since then, Christelle has gained experience as a Junior Business Development Manager working for a large, privately-owned, national transport company where she was responsible for creating, maintaining, and optimising business relationships.

As Ekera’s Project Co-Ordinator, Christelle is responsible for providing strategic, operational and other assistance to the Ekera Executive Team with regard to the identification, analysis, commercial evaluation, securement and related project management activities for new or existing properties or activities, to fulfil the objectives of the Company’s designated growth plan.

Christelle will assist to conduct the operations of the Ekera Group of Companies and to identify potential future sites, mechanisms for securing the sites and to perform initial site feasibility studies to support the consideration of new Ekera Medical facilities. Christelle will also assist to identify new business opportunities, growth mechanisms and entry to market options for the Company.
